This is a polyethylene expansion tank for the diesel engine cooling system, functioning as a volumetric buffer for coolant during thermal cycles. The component works directly with a pressure cap that maintains constant system overpressure (1.0–1.5 bar), raising the boiling point of the fluid and preventing localized boiling in the cylinder head. The critical wear mechanism involves material fatigue and UV degradation, leading to cracking in the upper section of the tank at the cap mounting zone, which causes leaks and fluid loss. Failure to replace this element immediately, despite its low part cost, risks engine overheating that can result in cylinder head warping or gasket failure beneath it. Planned replacement together with a new pressure cap eliminates the risk of catastrophic failure; should engine damage occur, repair costs will exceed the tank’s replacement value by several multiples.
