The steering tie rod assembly for an articulated drive axle is a complete front-axle steering linkage unit consisting of a forged 42CrMo4 (1.7225) steel rod subjected to heat treatment and two factory-installed spherical ball joints at both ends. The central rod features symmetrically machined left-hand and right-hand threads terminated with self-locking nuts, enabling wheel toe adjustment within the range prescribed by Ackermann geometry—typical static toe-in for heavy-duty wheel excavators of the A series is 1–3 mm. The ball joints feature case-hardened and tempered ball surfaces (hardness 58–62 HRC) mating with sintered bronze or polymeric bushing inserts; a nitrile rubber gaiter secured by a metal band protects the socket against abrasion and fretting corrosion from ingressing water and dust. The joint pin is seated in the track rod eye on a conical bore and secured with a castle nut and cotter pin torqued per DTR specification—loss of the cotter pin or excessive axial and radial play of the pin (detectable by wheel rock when the axle is lifted) mandate immediate replacement. Rupture of the sealing gaiter is the primary cause of premature joint wear. The tie rod requires replacement following curb strikes that cause rod bending beyond straightness tolerance, manifesting as uneven tire wear and machine pull to one side. This component is fitted to wheel excavators of the A series and wheel loaders of the L series equipped with Liebherr drive axles featuring hydrostatic power steering.
