The cardan joint cross is a drive transmission element in the kardanic system of Liebherr heavy machinery, transferring rotational torque between the propeller shaft and the half-shaft at variable deflection angles up to 15°. The cross body is manufactured from alloy steel 18CrNiMo7-6 subjected to carburization and hardening to 58–62 HRC on a diffusion layer 0.8–1.2 mm deep, ensuring resistance to contact fatigue and abrasive wear under radial loads exceeding 120 kN. The trunnions are ground to precision Ra ≤ 0.4 µm with diameter tolerance in IT5 class, eliminating fit clearance in needle roller cup bearings and minimizing fretting effects during microoscillations. Trunnion sealing is accomplished using fluorinated elastomer resistant to transmission oils up to 150 °C and grease purge pressure of 6 bar, while lubricating channels ensure uniform distribution of EP grease across the bearing load zone at any operating angle. The cross geometry is precisely matched to the specific cardan node of Liebherr drive axles, accounting for cup bearing spacing, trunnion length, and maximum continuous working torque of 4500 Nm. Cross replacement is recommended upon detection of contact scoring, trunnion corrosion exceeding Rc 2 class, or bearing play exceeding 0.05 mm.
