Dit element dicht de plaats af waar de as uit de pompbehuizing komt, voorkomt dat hydraulische olie onder druk lekt en blokkeert dat water, stof en verontreinigingen de pompbinnenkant binnendringen. Het belangrijkste slijtagemechanisme is verharding en scheuren van de afdichtingslip als gevolg van hoge oli\u00ebtemperatuur en slijtage van het werkoppervlak dat met de as samenwerkt. Lekken leidt tot drukval in het hydrostatische circuit, olieverbruik en risico op pompbeschadiging door bedrijf met onvoldoende smering. Geplande vervanging van de afdichting bij elke pompservice is veel goedkoper dan reparatie of vervanging van de gehele A4VG-pomp.
