This component seals the point where the shaft exits the pump housing, preventing leakage of pressurized hydraulic oil while blocking the ingress of water, dust, and contaminants into the pump interior. Its primary wear mechanism is hardening and cracking of the sealing lip due to high oil temperatures, as well as wear of the surface in contact with the shaft. Seal failure leads to pressure drop in the hydrostatic circuit, oil loss, and risk of pump damage due to operation with insufficient lubrication. Planned replacement of the seal at each pump service is significantly cheaper than repair or replacement of the entire A4VG pump.
