The planet gear of the travel drive is a critical element of the drive unit, forming the heart of the planetary gear reduction system, where it works in conjunction with the sun gear and ring gear to transmit torque from the hydraulic motor to the drive wheels. This component is manufactured from hardened case-carburized steel (for example 16MnCr5) and features an integrated needle roller bearing that enables rotation around the planet carrier pins under high cyclic loading and elevated operating temperatures. The critical wear mechanism is material fatigue leading to tooth spalling, as well as brinelling of the needle roller bearing under the influence of sudden shock loads, which when combined with the presence of metal debris in the drive oil can result in seizure of the entire gear set. Planned replacement of all planet gears as a complete set (typically 3–4 units) is significantly more economical than repair following failure, since mixing worn and new gears causes uneven load distribution, accelerating destruction of the new components. Such a service strategy ensures retention of full tractive force and steering precision of the machine, avoiding costly downtime and the necessity of replacing the entire reduction unit.
Travel-system component for LIEBHERR construction machinery — used in travel reducers and final drives of crawler machines (excavators, crawler loaders, dozers) as well as in drive axles and wheel-hub planetary reductions of wheeled machines (wheel loaders, wheeled excavators). Industry synonyms: travel drive, final drive, drive axle, traction drive, travel reducer, planetary final drive, drive reducer, wheel-hub reduction.
